Condition
Heart Failure
When the heart cannot pump enough blood to meet the body's needs.

What it is
Heart failure does NOT mean the heart has stopped. It means the heart muscle is weakened or stiff and cannot pump effectively. Many patients live full lives with the right medicines, devices, and lifestyle.
Symptoms

- Breathlessness — first on exertion, later at rest or while lying down
- Swelling of feet, ankles, or abdomen
- Fatigue and reduced exercise tolerance
- Waking up gasping at night
- Rapid weight gain from fluid retention
Risk factors
- Previous heart attack
- Long-standing hypertension
- Diabetes
- Valve disease
- Excess alcohol
- Viral infection of the heart (myocarditis)
- Family history of cardiomyopathy
How it's diagnosed

- Echocardiogram (most important)
- NT-proBNP blood test
- ECG
- Chest X-ray
- Cardiac MRI in selected cases
Treatment options

- Four pillars of modern therapy: ARNI/ACE inhibitor, beta-blocker, MRA, SGLT2 inhibitor
- Diuretics for fluid control
- CRT or AICD device in selected patients
- Treatment of the underlying cause (CAD, valve disease, BP)
- Salt and fluid restriction, daily weight monitoring
FAQ
Questions patients ask us most
Is heart failure curable?+
In some cases — especially when caused by a treatable problem — heart function can fully recover. In most cases, it is managed like a chronic condition with excellent quality of life.
Why is daily weighing important?+
A sudden weight gain of more than 2 kg in 2–3 days usually means fluid is building up. Reporting this early prevents hospitalisation.
