Device
AICD & CRT Devices
Advanced devices that prevent sudden cardiac death and treat heart failure.

What it is
An AICD (Automated Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator) constantly monitors the heart rhythm and delivers a life-saving shock if a dangerous rhythm occurs. A CRT (Cardiac Resynchronisation Therapy) device improves the pumping efficiency of weak hearts. Some patients need a combined CRT-D.
When it's needed
- Severely weak heart (ejection fraction ≤ 35%) despite optimal medicines
- Survivor of cardiac arrest
- Dangerous ventricular rhythms
- Wide QRS on ECG with heart failure (for CRT)
How it's done

The implantation is similar to a pacemaker but with one or more additional leads. The procedure takes 90–150 minutes. Device testing is done in the cathlab itself.
Recovery

Hospital stay 2–3 days. Cardiac rehab and detailed device counselling are essential. Remote monitoring is increasingly used so any rhythm event is communicated quickly.
FAQ
Questions patients ask us most
Does an AICD shock hurt?+
Yes, briefly — patients describe it as a strong thump in the chest. But that shock can save your life. We programme the device carefully to avoid unnecessary shocks.
How long does a CRT device last?+
Battery life is typically 6–10 years depending on usage. We track it at every follow-up.
