DVT – Deep Vein Thrombosis: Know the Signs Before It Becomes Dangerous

A blood clot in a deep vein may sound minor, but if left untreated it can travel to the lungs. Dr. Nikhila Pachani, Interventional Cardiologist in Rajkot, explains DVT and why acting early matters.

DVT – Deep Vein Thrombosis: Know the Signs Before It Becomes Dangerous

In a recent awareness video, Dr. Nikhila Pachani, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Backbone Medicity Hospital, Rajkot, shared important information about Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) — a condition that is more common than many people realise and can turn serious very quickly if ignored.

What Is DVT?

DVT happens when a blood clot forms inside a deep vein, most often in the leg. The clot can partially or fully block blood flow through that vein. While it may seem like just a leg problem, the real danger lies in what can happen next.

Who Is at Higher Risk?

Certain groups of people face a greater chance of developing DVT:

  • Patients who are immobile for long periods — especially after orthopaedic (bone or joint) surgeries
  • Cancer patients, whose blood tends to clot more easily
  • People with abnormal blood-clotting conditions, whether inherited or acquired

Long travel, bed rest after any major surgery, or simply being inactive for days at a stretch can also raise the risk.

Why DVT Can Be Life-Threatening

If a clot in the leg breaks loose, it can travel through the bloodstream all the way to the lungs. This is called Pulmonary Embolism (PE) — a potentially life-threatening emergency that requires immediate medical attention.

This is why DVT should never be ignored or treated as "just a leg problem."

What Are the Symptoms?

DVT does not always announce itself loudly. Watch out for:

  • Swelling in the leg or calf
  • Pain or tenderness, especially when standing or walking
  • Warmth in the affected area
  • Redness or discolouration of the skin

However, some people have no symptoms at all, which makes awareness even more important.

Know the Signs — Act Early

The message from Dr. Pachani is clear: early recognition saves lives. If you or someone you know has recently had surgery, has been bedridden, or belongs to a high-risk group and notices any of the above symptoms, do not wait and watch.

DVT is treatable when caught in time. Delaying care raises the risk of pulmonary embolism and other serious complications.

If you are concerned about leg swelling, unexplained pain, or your risk of blood clots, consider consulting a qualified cardiologist or vascular specialist. You can book a consultation with Dr. Nikhila Pachani at Backbone Medicity Hospital, Rajkot.
