What Is an Echocardiogram? A Cardiologist from Rajkot Explains the 4 Main Types

An echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart. Dr. Nikhila Pachani from Rajkot explains TTE, TEE, Stress Echo, and Fetal Echo — and when each one is used.

What Is an Echocardiogram?

An echocardiogram — often called an "echo" — is simply an ultrasound of the heart. Just like an ultrasound can show a baby inside the womb, an echo uses sound waves to show how your heart beats and pumps blood in real time. It does not use radiation, and it is a non-invasive way for doctors to get a clear picture of how your heart is working.

Dr. Nikhila Pachani, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Backbone Medicity Hospital, Rajkot, recently explained that there are four main types of echocardiogram — and each one serves a different purpose.

The 4 Main Types of Echocardiogram

1. Transthoracic Echo (TTE)

This is the standard echo that most people are familiar with. A small probe is placed on the chest, and images of the heart are produced. It is completely non-invasive, requires no preparation, and is usually the first test a cardiologist will order when checking heart health.

2. Transesophageal Echo (TEE)

In this type, a thin, flexible probe is gently passed through the food pipe (oesophagus). Because the oesophagus sits very close to the heart, this gives a much closer and clearer view — especially useful when standard echo images are not detailed enough, or when a doctor needs to examine heart valves or check for clots.

3. Stress Echo

A stress echo checks how the heart performs under physical or chemical stress. The patient either exercises on a treadmill or is given a medication that increases the heart rate, and images are taken before and after. This helps doctors detect blockages or weakness that may not show up when the heart is at rest.

4. Fetal Echo

A fetal echo is done during pregnancy to check the heart of the unborn baby. It can detect congenital heart problems early, giving families and doctors time to plan the right care before or after birth.

Why Does the Type of Echo Matter?

Each type of echo gives different information. Your cardiologist will choose the right one based on your symptoms, age, and medical history. Together, these tests help doctors diagnose heart conditions with greater accuracy and plan the most appropriate treatment.

If you or a family member have been advised an echo — or if you have symptoms like shortness of breath, chest discomfort, or palpitations — consider speaking with a qualified cardiologist to understand which test is right for you.
