What Is IVUS? How Doctors See Inside Your Heart Arteries
Have you ever wondered how a cardiologist knows exactly what is happening inside a blocked heart artery? The answer lies in a technology called IVUS – Intravascular Ultrasound.
Dr. Nikhila Pachani, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Backbone Medicity Hospital, Rajkot, recently explained this technology in a way that every patient can understand.
What Is IVUS?
IVUS stands for Intravascular Ultrasound. It is a specialised imaging tool used during heart procedures such as angioplasty.
A very small ultrasound probe is attached to the tip of a thin, flexible tube called a catheter. The cardiologist gently guides this catheter into the heart artery. Once inside, the probe sends out sound waves that create detailed, real-time images of the artery walls from the inside.
Think of it like a tiny camera — but one that uses sound instead of light.
What Can IVUS Show?
Regular angiography gives a 2D outline of the artery, like a shadow on an X-ray. IVUS goes a step further. It can clearly show:
- How thick or hard the artery walls are – including calcium deposits that may not show on standard X-ray imaging
- How severe a blockage really is – its exact size and shape
- Whether a stent is placed correctly – fully expanded and sitting snugly against the artery wall
This level of detail helps the cardiologist make more informed decisions during the procedure.
Why Does This Matter for Patients?
When a cardiologist can see the artery clearly from the inside, they can:
- Choose the right size of stent for the patient
- Avoid leaving gaps between the stent and the artery wall (which can lead to future problems)
- Feel more confident in complex or challenging cases
IVUS is particularly useful in complex angioplasty cases — for example, when multiple arteries are blocked, when calcium is present, or when the blockage is in a tricky location.
IVUS in Rajkot and Saurashtra
Advanced cardiac imaging technologies like IVUS are now available in Rajkot, bringing a higher standard of heart care closer to patients across Saurashtra and Gujarat — without needing to travel to a metro city.
If you or a family member has been advised angioplasty or has concerns about a heart blockage, consult a qualified interventional cardiologist to understand which imaging and treatment options are right for you.
