Navratri Garba & Your Heart: Who Should Be Careful This Festival Season
Navratri is one of Gujarat's most loved festivals. The energy, the music, and the dancing bring communities together every year. But Garba is also a high-intensity activity — and for some people, it can put extra stress on the heart.
Dr. Nikhila Pachani, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Backbone Medicity Hospital, Rajkot, has shared an important message ahead of Navratri 2025: Garba is a celebration, not a stress test.
Who Should Avoid Garba?
Dr. Pachani advises the following groups to avoid Garba this season:
- People with uncontrolled blood pressure — vigorous dancing can cause sudden spikes in BP.
- Those who have had a recent heart attack — the heart needs time to heal, and intense exercise too soon can be risky.
- People with severe valve disease — conditions like severe aortic or mitral valve disease limit how much the heart can handle physically.
- Those living with heart failure — the heart is already working harder than normal, and prolonged dancing can make things worse.
Warning Signs to Watch For
Even if you feel fine, stop dancing immediately if you experience any of the following:
- Chest pain or chest tightness
- Breathlessness that feels unusual
- Dizziness or feeling faint
These symptoms should never be ignored in a crowded Garba venue. Sit down, rest, and seek medical help right away.
Special Caution for Two More Groups
Pregnant women with complications should check with their doctor before participating in any physically demanding activity during Navratri.
People recovering from surgery — whether cardiac or otherwise — should also be careful and follow their doctor's advice about physical activity.
Get a Heart Check Before You Dance
If you are unsure about your heart health, Dr. Pachani recommends getting a check-up before the festivities begin. A simple consultation and, if needed, a non-invasive heart evaluation can give you peace of mind — and keep you safe on the dance floor.
Navratri is meant to be enjoyed. With a little awareness and the right precautions, most people can celebrate safely and fully.
If you have any existing heart condition or are unsure about your fitness for Garba, consult a qualified cardiologist before the festival season begins.
