5 Warning Signs That Chest Pain Could Be a Heart Attack
Chest pain can have many causes, but some signs point clearly to a heart attack. Dr. Nikhila Pachani, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Backbone Medicity Hospital, Rajkot, has shared five key warning signs every person should know.
1. Pain or Pressure in the Centre or Left Side of the Chest
This is the most common sign. The feeling can range from a dull ache to a heavy pressure — almost like something is squeezing or sitting on your chest. Do not ignore it, even if it feels mild.
2. Pain That Spreads to the Arm, Neck, Jaw, or Back
Heart attack pain does not always stay in the chest. It can travel down the left arm, up into the neck or jaw, or even spread across the back. This "radiating" pain is an important warning sign.
3. Chest Discomfort Along With Shortness of Breath
If you feel chest tightness and find it hard to breathe at the same time — even while resting — that combination needs immediate attention.
4. Sweating, Nausea, or Dizziness Along With Chest Discomfort
Breaking into a cold sweat, feeling sick in the stomach, or feeling lightheaded together with chest discomfort are serious signals. These symptoms together make a heart attack more likely.
5. Pain That Lasts More Than a Few Minutes or Keeps Coming Back
Normal muscle pain usually goes away quickly. Heart attack pain tends to last longer than a few minutes or may ease and then return. Do not wait to see if it passes on its own.
What Should You Do?
If you or someone around you notices these signs, do not wait. Rush to the nearest hospital right away. Time is very important during a heart attack — the sooner treatment begins, the better the outcome.
