Pacemaker Dressing Care: What Every Patient Should Know After Implantation
Getting a pacemaker is a life-changing step for many heart patients. But the procedure does not end in the cath lab — proper care at home, especially of the wound dressing, plays a big role in a smooth recovery.
Dr. Nikhila Pachani, DM Cardiology, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist based in Rajkot, Gujarat, recently shared practical, easy-to-follow guidance on pacemaker dressing care for patients and their families.
Keep the Dressing Clean, Dry, and Undisturbed
The first and most important rule is simple: do not touch, wet, or disturb the dressing. For the first five to seven days, avoid letting water run over that area. This means no showering on the pacemaker side during this period.
Also, do not apply any powder, cream, ointment, or antiseptic on the wound on your own. Use only what your doctor has prescribed.
Limit Arm Movement on the Pacemaker Side
For the first two to four weeks, be careful with the arm on the same side as your pacemaker. Avoid:
- Lifting heavy objects
- Stretching the arm outward
- Raising the arm above shoulder level
These movements can disturb the pacemaker leads (wires) that are still settling into position inside the heart. Keeping the arm relatively still during this period gives the leads time to stabilise safely.
Watch for Warning Signs of Infection
Even with good care, it is important to stay alert. Contact your doctor right away if you notice any of the following:
- Redness or warmth around the wound
- Swelling that is growing
- Any discharge or fluid from the site
- Fever
- Worsening pain at the wound area
These can be early signs of infection, and catching them early makes treatment much easier.
A Small Effort That Makes a Big Difference
Pacemaker implantation is a well-established procedure performed regularly at hospitals like Backbone Medicity Hospital in Rajkot. The device itself does the important work of keeping your heart rhythm steady — but your care at home protects the wound and supports a safe recovery.
Following these simple steps helps avoid complications and gets you back to your normal routine faster.
If you or a family member has recently had a pacemaker implanted, or if you have any concerns about heart rhythm, consider booking a consultation with a qualified cardiologist for personalised guidance.
