Do You Really Need to Stay in Hospital After Angioplasty?
Angioplasty is one of the most common procedures done to open blocked heart arteries. But many patients — and their families — have one big question on their mind: How long will I need to stay in the hospital?
Dr. Nikhila Pachani, DM Cardiology and Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Backbone Medicity Hospital, Rajkot, is addressing this very question in her latest patient awareness video.
What Is Angioplasty?
Angioplasty (also called Percutaneous Coronary Intervention or PCI) is a procedure where a small balloon and usually a stent (a tiny metal tube) are used to open a blocked or narrowed artery in the heart. It is done through a small puncture, most often in the wrist or groin, without open-heart surgery.
Hospital Stay After Angioplasty
Modern angioplasty techniques have become much less invasive over the years. In many straightforward cases, patients do not need a long hospital stay. The exact duration depends on several factors, including:
- The type of angioplasty — planned (elective) or emergency (during a heart attack)
- The access site used — radial (wrist) access often allows earlier discharge compared to femoral (groin) access
- The patient's overall health condition — other medical problems may require a longer observation period
- How the patient feels after the procedure — the medical team monitors heart rate, blood pressure, and the puncture site before discharge
For many stable, elective angioplasty patients, going home the next day or even the same day (in select cases) is possible. Emergency angioplasty, such as during a heart attack, usually needs a longer stay for monitoring and recovery.
After You Go Home
Going home sooner does not mean the care stops. Patients are usually asked to:
- Take prescribed medicines regularly (including blood thinners)
- Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity for a few days
- Keep the puncture site clean and dry
- Attend follow-up appointments as advised
- Watch for any warning signs like chest pain, breathlessness, or bleeding at the puncture site
