Recent international guidance highlights that a single lifetime screening for Lipoprotein(a) — known as Lp(a) — could significantly reduce a person's risk of heart disease morbidity and mortality. Lp(a) is a genetically inherited cholesterol particle. Levels are set at birth and do not change much with diet or exercise.
Who should consider it
Many people with a strong family history of premature heart disease have an undiagnosed Lp(a) elevation. The test is now widely available in Indian labs and needs to be done only once in a lifetime.
Why it matters for you
Ask your cardiologist about a one-time Lp(a) test — especially if heart attacks run in your family, or if you have had a heart event yourself despite normal cholesterol. If Lp(a) is high, more aggressive control of other risk factors (LDL, BP, smoking) becomes critical.
