World Hypertension Day was observed on 17 May 2026 with the theme "Controlling Hypertension Together". The day highlighted that approximately 220 million Indians live with hypertension, yet only 10–12% have their blood pressure adequately controlled. More than half are unaware they have the condition at all.
Why "silent killer" still fits
High blood pressure typically has no symptoms until it has already damaged the heart, kidneys, brain, or eyes. By the time someone presents with stroke, heart attack, or kidney failure, BP has often been silently elevated for years.
What you can do today
A 2-minute BP check can prevent a heart attack, stroke, or kidney failure later. Cardiologists are urging regular BP checks at home, in the workplace, and in community camps. If you have not had your BP checked in the last 12 months, do it this week.
