Stress Tests (TMT, Stress Echo, DSE)

Checking how your heart performs when it has to work harder.

Cardiology stress test room with treadmill and ECG monitor
Stress tests reveal blockages that show only when the heart works hard.

What it is

Stress tests look for hidden artery blockages by recording the heart's response to exercise (TMT, stress echo) or a stress medicine (Dobutamine Stress Echo). They are often the first step in evaluating chest pain.

When it's needed

  • Chest discomfort on exertion
  • Borderline ECG findings
  • Risk-factor screening in selected patients
  • Assessing exercise capacity after a heart attack or surgery

How it's done

Patient walking on treadmill with ECG leads during stress test
Trained staff and emergency equipment are present throughout.

You walk on a treadmill at gradually increasing speed and slope while ECG and BP are recorded. Stress echo adds heart ultrasound at peak exercise. DSE uses medicine instead of treadmill for patients who cannot walk.

Recovery
